Few comic book characters can match the wealth of Tony Stark. The guy has billions upon billions of dollars, and while his real-life counterpart hasn't quite reached that level of net worth yet, Robert Downey Jr. has made some serious dough playing the armored Avenger. In fact, it has been revealed that Downey made a whopping $10 million for reprising Tony Stark in Jon Watts' Spider-Man: Homecoming last year.
According to Variety's report on Hollywood salaries, Robert Downey Jr. made $10 million for his work on Spider-Man: Homecoming, putting him in the salary range of other major Hollywood heavy hitters like Leonardo DiCaprio in the upcoming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Kevin Hart in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. That paycheck is impressive for pretty much any job, but it's even more impressive when we consider the fact that Spider-Man: Homecoming features less Tony Stark than many of the other Iron Man-centric Marvel Cinematic Universe movies like The Avengers or Captain America: Civil War. In fact, with an estimated 15 minutes worth of screen time, this basically means that every minute of Tony Stark from Spider-Man: Homecoming was hundreds of thousands of dollars.
It's arguably not that surprising to learn that Robert Downey Jr. has become such a valuable commodity for the Marvel Cinematic Universe properties. Until the unexpected box office success of Black Panther earlier this year, all of the top five highest-grossing MCU movies featured Tony Stark. Moreover, before T'Challa's first movie, Iron Man 3 was the highest-grossing MCU solo feature, which seems fitting when we consider the fact that T'Challa is one of the few characters in the comics who is wealthier than Tony Stark.
Of course, the money has obviously helped Robert Downey Jr. rise to a new status in life. In fact, referencing the change that Tony Stark has had on his career and his life path, Downey even recently admitted that he has seen himself as "semi-retired" since the release of Iron Man back in 2008. The debut of the Marvel Cinematic Universe turned him into one of the biggest movie stars in the world practically overnight, and he has only occasionally branched out into other areas like the Sherlock Holmes films and Tropic Thunder.
Robert Downey Jr. continues to earn his paychecks over at Marvel, and the movies that he's involved in have continued to earn big bucks for the folks at Disney as well.
