Looks Like Steve Trevor Is Going To Be In Wonder Woman 1984 After All

Quick, list the most heartbreaking comic book movie sequences of the last five years. You're sure to select a broad range of moments from all over the Marvel Cinematic Universe, X-Men universe, and DCEU, but one obvious choice that's hard to ignore is the death of Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) in Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman. The character's heroic demise in the final moments of the film led many to wonder (pun intended) if that was the last we would ever see of the fan-favorite hero. It looks like that's not the case, as a new look at Wonder Woman 2 (now called Wonder Woman 1984), has been released online by Warner Bros., and it features a clear shot at the old character in a new, 1984-oriented setting. Check it out, below.

In all honesty, Steve Trevor looks just as confused as the rest of us. The character is not only somehow alive almost seventy years after seemingly perishing to prevent a plane full of German gas from reaching London, but he also looks like he hasn't aged a day. We don't necessarily know how Steve Trevor will factor into Wonder Woman 1984's story, but his return promises some seriously emotional turns for Gal Gadot's Diana Prince.

Of course, this image has us wondering how Steve Trevor could return for Wonder Woman 1984 in a way that feels earned. One obvious explanation would be that he's merely appearing in a dream sequence -- though for Diana to imagine him wearing clothing from the 1980s might seem silly. Another possibility is that Chris Pine is simply playing a descendant of Steve Trevor who also happens to be named Steve, which is actually something that the comics and Wonder Woman TV series have played with over the years.

Another possibility to consider is the idea that this isn't Steve Trevor at all. DC lore is chock full of characters who can disguise themselves as other heroes and villains, so the idea of Chris Pine returning to play someone like Martian Manhunter or even Clayface seems reasonable. After all, for Warner Bros. to tell us that Steve Trevor/Chris Pine is back in Wonder Woman 1984 seems like a massive spoiler to give away this early in the film's development, so there is a case to be made that Patty Jenkins and the folks at DC have another secret hidden up their sleeves.

Gleaning clear plot details from such an enigmatic image is hard, especially this early in Wonder Woman 1984's development. That said, it seems reasonable to assume that Wonder Woman 1984 will be a bit more referential of pop culture with its story, and it will have a more colorful, neon look than the gray, muted atmosphere of the WWI-set original.

Why David Gordon Green Finally Cut Halloween II Out Of The Continuity Of His New Film

While the new Halloween is very much a sequel instead of a reboot, it also has a unique approach to the franchise's continuity. Specifically, with the exception of John Carpenter's original, it completely ignores everything. This includes what was previously the strongest continuation in the series -- Rick Rosenthal's Halloween II -- and director David Gordon Green recently revealed why it had to go:

I hung on tight to Halloween II for a while, and [Danny] McBride was always trying to get me to let it go. And then when we were talking kind of ultimately about the path, and once we got actually into the writing itself, we were just thinking it's scarier if it's random.

The Los Angeles press day for Halloween was held last month, and it was during a roundtable interview with David Gordon Green that he explained the approach he took to the continuity when putting together the script with co-writer Danny McBride. He really wanted there to be a way for their movie to include the events of Halloween II, but there was one key obstacle that made it impossible: the twist that reveals Laurie Strode is Michael Myers' sister.

Continuing his thought, David Gordon Green explained that the ultimate decision came down to the development of what would become one of the best sequences in the movie. As he arrives in Haddonfield and starts his killing spree, the camera follows Michael Myers in a continuous shot that tracks him murdering people in two different houses. It was when they were putting the whole thing that Green realized it just wouldn't mesh with the revelations of Halloween II:

Our collaborator, Jeff Bradley, wrote the sequence where Michael goes door to door, and had just this thing in his head of this whole one shot thing, and then we're like, 'Oh yeah!' And then when I read that I was like, 'Okay, but that only works if he's not just trying to kill his sister, you know?' And so that, that was a pivotal scene for me, not only just in the effort that we had in production trying to rehearse it and get it right, but also in terms of accepting that I was going to have to say goodbye to a movie that really liked.

In Halloween II, events pick up right where John Carpenter's film left off, with Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) being taken to the local hospital to be treated for her injuries. Unfortunately for her, Michael Myers successfully evades death/capture, and continues hunting for her -- which it turns out is because they are related. The new Halloween makes a bit of a joke about it, saying the brother-sister relationship is "something people made up," and definitely doesn't maintain it in continuity.

David Gordon Green made it clear he is a fan of Halloween II, but wrapped his comments on the matter explaining that it very much was the right decision in the end. Not only did it give them more freedom in the writing process, but it allowed them to also liberate Michael. Said the director,

They were right. I mean, it totally liberates you from the burden. It enhances the randomness and the horror of it, because if he's just on an agenda... I'd much rather him get out of the cage, and he's just doing what he does. And then there's the, 'Don't forget about me. I'm over here.' I like that, where the victim can kind of turn the tables.

Avengers: Endgame's Metacritic Score Is Lower Than You'd Think

Part of the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that it consistently churns out blockbusters that are enjoyed by both audiences and critics alike and this weekends Avengers: Endgame looks to be no different. While we wont know what audiences think until it opens tonight, the film currently enjoys a great certified fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating that the large majority of critics gave it a positive review. On Metacritic however, Avengers: Endgames score is lower than youd think.

Avengers: Endgame currently has a score of 78 out of 100 on Metacritic based on 47 reviews of the film. That indicates that those 47 reviews of Avengers: Endgame incorporated into the Metascore were generally favorable. However, Generally favorable and a C+ level score are a bit lower than you might expect for this movie. It didnt even attain Metacritics Must-See award designation.

At a glance this certainly seems too low, especially given some of the positively gushing reviews out there. So what gives?

First, it is important to understand how Metacritic comes up with its score. Many people misunderstand what Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer percentage actually represents, but Metacritics Metascore can be even more difficult to interpret. Metacritic curates reviews from only select critics, and not all reviewers opinions about a film are weighted equally. And reviews that dont come with a numerical or letter grade score to translate are assigned one from Metacritic based on the reviewers qualitative opinion of the film.

For Avengers: Endgame, of those 47 reviews, only one is negative, two are mixed and the rest are positive. But not all of those positive reviews were 100 scores so Endgame ended up at a generally favorable 78. To put that into perspective, some movies in the past year or so that scored higher than Endgame and earned the Must-See designation are Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Mission: Impossible Fallout and A Quiet Place.

It might not be what youd expect for Avengers: Endgame or what you think it deserves, but the films Metascore is actually pretty high in relation to the rest of its MCU stable mates. In fact, the only MCU movies with higher scores on Metacritic are Iron Man with a 79 and last years Black Panther with an 88. For the most part the MCU films are between 60-75 with Thor: The Dark World taking last place with a 54.

So while Avengers: Endgames Metacritic score is lower than youd think it would be, it is still pretty good. Ultimately, professional reviews and sites like Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes are tools you can use to make informed decisions about what movies are worth your money as a consumer. But something tells me just about everyone decided they would be seeing Avengers: Endgame long ago.
