This Rotten Week: Predicting Peppermint And The Nun Reviews

Now that we've hit Labor Day weekend, the summer season is coming to a close. It's the last gasp of beaches, barbecues, and, classically, big tentpole movies. But the end of the season just means that we have to start getting ready for the fall, and on Friday things kick off with Jennifer Garner getting revenge, and a woman of the cloth getting all creepy. Get ready for Peppermint and The Nun.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

You can give me a lead with a "very particular set of skills" any day, and twice on Sunday. Put a little chip on their shoulder and a criminal organization that needs to be mowed through violently, and you've got a movie I'll sit down and watch. In Peppermint we have Jennifer Garner, whose family is gunned down by members of a drug cartel. She goes into hiding and trains herself to be a killing machine all for the opportunity to waste the baddies when she resurfaces five years later.

If it has something of a familiar ring it's because director Pierre Morel also helmed Taken (53%) and other similarly styled action flicks like From Paris With Love (37%) and Gunman (17%). The critical returns diminished with each movie, though I think there's some reason to expect a bounce back with his latest. Jennifer Garner looks the part of an ass-kicker in Peppermint, and the action appears tight. I don't think it completely wows anyone, but for sure will be watchable.

Man, the poster for The Nun is so off-putting taht it wasn't all that easy for me to fire up the trailer - which, yes, did creep the hell out of me. It's got all the makings of a fright-fest, with a haunted monastery inhabited by one seriously scary demon. Two folks from the Vatican are sent to investigate the suicide of a nun, and probably could have done themselves a favor by choosing to travel in the exact opposite direction of the incident.

The Nun is the latest part of the growing Conjuring Universe, which includes:The Conjuring (86%) Annabelle (29%) The Conjuring 2 (79%) Annabelle: Creation (70%)That's three out of four flicks with very positive reviews, and I think we see another win in The Nun. The tone is so damn dark and scary, and the franchise has a solid track record of critical success, so I think we can make some basic assumptions about how it will do with critics. I suspect they come out on the positive side of things.

It was a very solid week for the Rotten Watch last time around, with one movie almost dead on, and the other missing the win zone by only one point. First off, Kin (Predicted: 35% Actual: 34%) nearly hit the bullseye, and it was fairly easy to tell this would miss with critics. The trailer didn't make a whole lot of sense, there didn't appear to be any real stakes, and the story seemed thin at best. It couldn't overcome a strong cast to make any real waves with critics who came away completely underwhelmed.

Meanwhile, Operation Finale (Predicted: 51% Actual: 62%) crept up just enough over the course of the week to put it just out of range. I'm going to still call this a win and imagine that another negative review will come in the short term. Critics generally liked the film, but even though the story itself is fascinating, Oscar Isaac and company didn't knock it all the way out of the park. Those who knocked it said the pacing was off and it never really fully gets going in terms of intrigue. It didn't perform poorly, but considering the subject matter, I could see how some would call it a disappointment.

Viggo Mortensen Apologizes For Using N-Word During Green Book Promotion

Viggo Mortensen has apologized for using the n-word during a panel discussion of his film Green Book. The panel was attended by his co-star Mahershala Ali, who later said he accepted Mortensen's apology. After Mortensen's initial comment was met with surprise and criticism, he issued this statement:

[Wednesday] night I participated in a Q&A session moderated by Elvis Mitchell following a screening of Green Book in Los Angeles. In making the point that many people casually used the "N" word at the time in which the movie story takes place, in 1962, I used the full word. Although my intention was to speak strongly against racism, I have no right to even imagine the hurt that is caused by hearing that word in any context, especially from a white man. I do not use the word in private or in public. I am very sorry that I did use the full word last night, and will not utter it again.

As Variety noted, Viggo Mortensen had used the n-word as an example of speech that's no longer common. The context is tied to his film Green Book, which is set in the Deep South in the 1960s. Mahershala Ali plays Jamaican-American pianist Don Shirley, with Mortensen as a mob enforcer serving as the world class pianist's security.

No one appears to be questioning Viggo Mortensen's intention, but he now regrets his choice of words during the ArcLight Cinemas Hollywood screening.

Green Book, directed by Peter Farrelly, has had nothing but positive attention up to this point. It was a surprise winner of the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, immediately launching into into Oscars contention.

So while Mahershala Ali is not happy with his co-star's word choice, he is also not willing to let this moment distract from the film and the intended message. Ali shared his own statement, accepting Viggo Mortensen's apology, while making it clear the use of the full n-word was "hurtful" and wrong:

However well-intended or intellectual the conversation may have been, it wasn't appropriate for Viggo to say the n-word. He has made it clear to me that he's aware of this, and apologized profusely immediately following the Q&A with Elvis Mitchell. Knowing his intention was to express that removing the n-word from your vocabulary doesn't necessarily disqualify a person as a racist or participating in actions or thoughts that are bigoted, I can accept and embrace his apology. An excellent and poignant thought was unfortunately overshadowed by voicing the word in its fullness. Which for me, is always hurtful.

Mahershala Ali continued (via Variety) by saying the use of the full n-word within the black community is already debated, and its usage should continue to be examined within the black community.

Mahershala Ali already has an Oscar for Moonlight, and he could win again for Green Book. Viggo Mortensen currently has two Academy Award nominations under his belt for Eastern Promises and Captain Fantastic. Green Book will expand its release in theaters November 21. Babadook Director Defends Sexual Assault Scenes In Controversial New Movie

Sexual assault is a theme that is difficult to confront in a manner that audiences at large will find acceptable. Even if based on historical events and precedent, theres a line that exists between what counts as enough and what counts as too much, as The Nightingale writer/director Jennifer Kent has just found out first hand.

After the latest film from the writer/director of The Babadook received some negative press for inciting several audience members to walk out of The Nightingale, Kent spoke towards these events in a statement that included the below remarks:

I do not believe this would be happening if the film was at all gratuitous or exploitative. Whilst The Nightingale contains historically accurate depictions of colonial violence and racism towards our Indigenous people, the film is not about violence Weve made this film in collaboration with Tasmanian Aboriginal elders, and they feel its an honest and necessary depiction of their history and a story that needs to be told. I remain enormously proud of the film.

From the early reports that have come out of The Nightingales early screenings, there are apparently repeated instances where a character is being sexually assaulted on screen. But the rage towards Jennifer Kents depiction of that horrific act isnt based around the act itself, but instead it seems to be pertaining to the frequency of the act included in the film.

This criticism was most bluntly expressed by an audience member who, during the films premiere in Sydney this past Sunday, exclaimed upon her exit, "Im not watching this. Shes already been raped twice. And yet, Jennifer Kent is resolute in the film shes presented the audience, as she told The Independent in her remarks, enforcing that the atrocities shes put onto film were historically accurate.

The Nightingales overall story isnt centered around this particular event though, as Aisling Franciosis protagonist Clare is pursuing a Lieutenant Hawkins, a British officer played by The Hunger Games Sam Claflin, through Australia in 1825. Her quest to find this man is rooted in the fact Hawkins has murdered her husband and infant child, and basically gotten away with these acts.

With a story that grim and brutal, much as The Babadook before it, its almost a surprise that The Nightingale would catch such fire for depicting the subject of sexual assault. But with various films in the past using that very theme as threadbare justification for character motivations, the discomfort a repeated execution of such an act on the screen would incite is a pretty big discussion point.

It can be assumed that distributor IFC films will stand by Jennifer Kents statement, and will release The Nightingale without any alteration. But if enough audience members complain, there might be a push for both parties to discuss a re-edited version of the film. And while most audience petitions these days are for frivolous matters, this might be one that catches fire, in hopes of boosting the films distribution prospects.

For now, it should be advised that if any potential audience member for The Nightingale has an aversion to sexual assault depicted in film, this just isnt going to be a film for them.

The Nightingale is slated for debut in limited release on August 2nd, with a nationwide expansion to follow at an undetermined date.

It's been over three years since we saw Channing Tatum's abs get splashed all over posters and trailers for Magic Mike XXL. The actor has since taken a slew of different roles that have not required shirtless scenes, including voice work in Smallfoot and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. However, he recently revealed he'd be totally down to slap on a thong to surprise fan at a Magic Mike Live show under one condition, noting:

Oh, yeah! I'm getting closer to back in shape, but if I'm ever back in shape, I promised the Magic Mike cast of Vegas and London that I will strap on the old thong again. I gotta do it soon because this old body isn't gonna do what it used to do anymore.

It's hard to imagine Channing Tatum not being in rock solid shape (while I suppose it's easy to imagine him in a thong thanks to his previous Magic Mike work); regardless, per his comments to ET we'll only see him try out some Magic Mike Live work if he gets into quote-unquote "shape."

Channing Tatum has been open fairly recently about gaining weight for Logan Lucky, the Steven Soderbergh movie he starred in in 2017. He's previously mentioned weight gain and getting soft related to the movie, noting that no one wants to see his character, Jimmy Logan, with his shirt off. Literally that's what he said about his weight gain as part of the role:

You definitely don't want to see Jimmy Logan with his shirt off, I can promise you that. We didn't design it like, 'Oh, Jimmy Logan's going to be out of shape,' but by the end of the movie I had put on, I dunno, 30-40 pounds and I was like, 'This is uncomfortable.' It was like actually painful. I did not like being that heavy.

In the time since, Channing Tatum has said he's "started eating better" as he prepares for roles like the oft-mentioned Gambit release. For now, though, he's set to play Superman in The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, which in all honesty is probably the most ideal superhero role, as it means he gets to be Superman without dealing with all of the weight and working out crap.

So, perhaps getting in thong shape for Magic Mike Live will be left for another day. As it stands, the live show based on the movie franchise is very popular. In fact, it recently opened a second run in London and is set to play 5 nights a week at the London's Hippodrome Casino. And it's safe to say that Channing Tatum enjoys revisiting Magic Mike moments on occasion.

The movie franchise was originally even inspired by Channing Tatum's own work as a stripper in Florida when he was only 18. He's come a long way since then, and apparently, so has his waistline.
