What Does James Gunn's Firing Mean For Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3?

We fully expect the week of San Diego Comic-Con to be a time for big news about major franchises, but nobody was quite expecting this. It's being reported that Disney has severed all ties with James Gunn following the recent resurfacing of a collection of tweets he wrote several years ago in which he made jokes regarding some very unfunny topics. While this obviously means that James Gunn will no longer be directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, this decision could ultimately change the franchise, and by association, the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, in some pretty major ways.

What we know about the current state of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is that James Gunn had already submitted the first draft of the script to Marvel. Therefore, the first question becomes, what happens to this script? Does Disney's decision to cut ties with Gunn mean that they won't use the script that's already been completed? It's possible they could start the film from scratch in order to be sure no trace of Gunn is associated with the movie. Of course, there's some question about whether or not the film has enough time to do that. Guardians Vol. 3 was expected to drop in 2020, likely in early May. That gives a new screenwriter less than a year to write a new movie in order to begin filming in time to make that date.

Even if Disney does decide to keep Gunn's script as it is, it's highly unlikely that Marvel will be 100% happy with the first draft. No writer gets everything right the first time. That means rewrites, and those rewrites will absolutely be handled by somebody else. These changes could be minor, but if, for example, Marvel takes issue with the way the current script ends, any rewrite would significantly change where things go from here and almost certainly in a way different than how James Gunn would handle it.

Even if the plot doesn't change, the flavor certainly well, if only because any other writer will have different taste in 70s pop music.

From there, the movie needs a new director. A cast that has now made four movies together will have to work with somebody totally new. While Gunn may not have directed the new Avengers films, he was still very much involved in making the Guardians work in those movies. Will this new person fit in well with the existing cast and crew? Will the actors be as comfortable with this new director or will they have trouble working and taking direction from somebody new? Even if Marvel finds a replacement who is skilled, it's possible any replacement will have trouble picking up this franchise. Any new director will also have a different vision of the material.

James Gunn had previously stated that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would be the end of the road for the current iteration of the Guardians, but we have no idea what that means. Was Gunn planning on having some characters die or leave the team? Rewrites could end up changing where any character actually finds themselves at the end of the movie, which will, in turn, change where they can go in the future.

While Spider-Man: Far From Home is currently set to be the official beginning of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we know that a lot will change after Avengers 4. Marvel has made no secret about the fact that the MCU will take on a more cosmic focus, and that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was going to play a huge part in that. If the movie changes drastically without James Gunn at the helm, how will those changes in turn change where Phase 4 goes from here?

Of course, there is one other, fairly drastic, but worth asking, question. Will there even be a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? It may seem crazy, and it's certainly unlikely, but one way Marvel could deal with this the issues it now has to consider is to scrap the entire idea. Depending on how the Guardians are left at the end of Avengers 4 the film might not be strictly necessary from a storytelling standpoint. Avengers: Infinity War brought the characters to very different places and one expects the next Avengers film will take them even further. Maybe that place will be a good enough ending for this team and Marvel just decides to move on.

We'll never really know how things will change from here because we'll now never see what would have been. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will almost certainly happen, but what it will look like is anybody's guess.





At last we have concrete information about the upcoming PG-13 reissue of Deadpool 2-- including its title and what to expect.. According to Deadline, the new version of the movie will be called Once Upon a Deadpool and 20th Century Fox will begin a limited 12-day engagement on Dec. 12, finishing up on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24).

Has Aquamans Blu-Ray Release Date Been Leaked?

Aquaman has been in theaters for over a month now, meaning that its time on the big screen is winding down. Since the gap between a movie finishing its theatrical run and arriving on home media is shorter than ever nowadays, some of you may be wondering when Aquaman will be available for purchase on Blu-ray and DVD. According to a new rumor, the sixth DC Extended Universe movie could drop on those formats on March 26.

This potential release date comes from The Digital Bits, which claims its sources have suggested March 26 as the "likeliest street date" for Aquaman. It goes without saying that this is by no means official, but if Aquaman does come out on Blu-ray and DVD on the last Tuesday of March, then that likely means that the digital release will precede it by two weeks (i.e. March 12), as is usually the case with home media releases nowadays. We'll have to wait and see if these are indeed the dates Warner Bros and DC drop Aquaman or if they have a different window in mind.

As one of the most visually stunning movies in the DCEU, you can bet there are a lot of people who are eager to be able to watch Aquaman in the comfort of their own home in high resolution. Of course, the movie has already cemented itself as a force to be reckoned with on the big screen. Although it came out in the second-to-last week of 2018, the superhero blockbuster has become the fifth highest-grossing movie of that year with its $1.067 billion worldwide haul. Critical reaction has been more mixed, but it will be interesting to see how well Aquaman sells on home media. Plus, just like with most major motion pictures, you can be sure there will be a lot of special features attached to the Aquaman Blu-ray, from deleted scenes to mini-documentaries.

Set after the events of Justice League, Aquaman followed Arthur Curry as he worked with allies like Mera and Vulko to stop his half-brother Orm, a.k.a. Ocean Master, from uniting the seven underwater kingdoms to attack the surface world. Along the way, Arthur and Mera also clashed with arguably Aquaman's most famous foe, the visually distinctive Black Manta. While Aquaman 2 hasn't officially gotten the green light, the movie definitely set the stage for a sequel, and Jason Momoa has been giving some thought on where the next story could go. Considering Aquaman's impressive commercial performance, it's a good bet that just like what happened with Wonder Woman, we'll be seeing Momoa's Arthur going on another solo adventure in the coming years.

Avengers: Endgame Reshoots Are In Full Swing

The Marvel Cinematic Universe may have been a well-oiled machine for the past decade, but bar was decidedly raised with Avengers: Infinity War. The Russo Brothers managed to balance the large ensemble cast, while bringing a story that had both action and heart. And with Thanos winning in the end and wiping out half the galaxy with the snap of his finger, moviegoers were left to wonder and theorize about what comes next.

The first trailer teased the world after The Decimation, but there are still a few months to wait until Endgame arrives in theaters. Reshoots are in full swing now, as actors have been posting on social media from the set. Take Guardians of the Galaxy standout Karen Gillan, who one again referenced the extensive makeup she wears to play Nebula over on Twitter.

Poor Karen Gillan. While she clearly loves playing Nebula throughout the MCU, the makeup has to get old after a few years. Avengers: Endgame marks Gillan's fourth appearance as her signature Marvel character, with Nebula presumably having a meaty role in the upcoming blockbuster.

Nebula popped up a few times during Infinity War, starting with being tortured by Thanos during the film's second act. She was once again hurt by her father Thanos, and used to coercing Gamora into revealing the Soul Stone's location. The blue badass eventually returned during the epic Battle on Titan, dropping a truth bomb on Peter Quill that would ruin their chance at beating Thanos. Ultimately she survived the snap, and was left stranded on the desolate planet with Tony Stark.

Karen Gillan isn't the only Guardians of the Galaxy actor currently on set for Endgame, as Zoe Saldana also posted from her makeup chair. Check it out.

While Gamora met a grisly fate during Avengers: Endgame, Zoe Saldana is still needed to shoot new footage for the upcoming sequel. As to what the green girl has in store, it's anyone's guess.

The Guardians of the Galaxy were hit hard by Thanos' assault, as Rocket and Nebula were the only survivors at the end of Infinity War. But rather than turning to dust during The Decimation, Gamora was killed earlier in the film by her father/kidnapper, as he needed to sacrifice a loved one to procure the Soul Stone. This makes her fate in the future of the MCU particularly precarious. Because if The Snap is reversed, that wouldn't necessarily bring Gamora back to life. We'll have to see.

Answers will arrive when Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters on April 26th, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
