Watch Ryan Gosling's Awkward Reaction When Asked If He'd Play Batman

Nobody is quite sure what the future of Batman really is on the big screen, which means that it's possible anybody could be the next Batman. However, if you were holding out hope that Ryan Gosling might be looking to take on the cape and cowl, you might what to put your expectations in check. The actor was recently asked if he would be interested in playing Batman and...it didn't go well. It's hard to describe just how awkward this gets. Just watch.

For a guy who makes a living delivering lines, Ryan Gosling is oddly speechless here. He just repeats "I don't know" a couple times before dumping the question off to his First Man director Damian Chazelle in order to avoid having to go on. He seems simply at a loss as to how to actually answer the question. Even after Variety expands the topic to superheroes in general, rather than just Batman specifically, Gosling can't seem to say whether he'd be interested in getting involved in the popular film genre.

It's a little odd if only because the "superhero question" has to be the single most popular one asked of any actor that isn't currently involved in making superhero movies. Ryan Gosling had to have been asked this question before, you'd expect he'd have a stock answer, even if it was a non-committal one. Being asked about playing Batman specifically, it's understandable if Gosling doesn't really want to say anything, considering it's not entirely clear if that role is actually available or not, but when it comes to superheroes in general, one would think he has a feeling. Either he'd like to do it, or he's happy doing other things.

One certainly wonders if Gosling may have been, or may currently be, in talks for a role in a superhero movie. It would be one explanation for his inability to answer. He can't talk about something that's in the middle of negotiations and saying the wrong thing could potentially jeopardize those talks. I feel like that's a long shot, but it's one explanation.

In the past, some actors, like Zoe Saldana, have called out the parts of Hollywood that look down on the blockbuster movies like the superhero genre. There is clearly a corner of that world that doesn't think much of those sorts of movies. Since Ryan Gosling, especially recently, has been making the "other" type of movies a lot, perhaps there's a bit of conflict there. If he says he wants to make a superhero movie then some might think less of him. If he says he doesn't, then he's one of those snobby Hollywood guys. It's a no-win scenario.

Could we ever see Ryan Gosling in a superhero movie? I don't know. It's not clear if he knows.

Why The Original Story For Coco Didnt Work

Pixar's Coco received praise from all corners thanks to its heartwarming story that brought Mexican culture to the forefront of global cinema. However, the original idea for Coco was going to be something quite different. I recently had an opportunity to speak with Coco director Lee Unkrich ahead of this week's digital release of Coco and he told me that his original pitch for the film wasn't going to be about a Mexican boy, but rather an American one with a Mexican family. However, after learning about the Dia de Los Muertos, Unkrich realized that his idea was exactly the opposite of the story he should be telling. First, he explained what the original idea he pitched to Pixar was going to be. According to Unkrich:

The first story that we developed for about 8 months or so, there was still a boy as the main character, but he was an American boy and he had a father who was American. His mother had been from Mexico but she had passed away right before the story started and it was a story about the father taking the boy down to Mexico to meet his Mexican family for the first time on Dia de Los Muertos. A series of strange events happened and the boy ended up going to the land of the dead. But ultimately that story, there was no Ernesto de la Cruz or any of that, it was a journey film that ultimately was about this kid coming to grips with his mother being gone and saying goodbye to her and letting go of her.

This first pitch feels very much like a Pixar movie. It's an emotional journey for a character which, if done well, means an emotional journey for the audience as well. The problem, as Lee Unkrich explained to me, was that after traveling to Mexico and really beginning to learn about what Dia de Los Muertos means to Mexico, he eventually realized that you can't tell a story that's a realistic depiction of Mexican culture, and tell a story about letting go of the dead, as the two ideas simply don't match. He clarified:

I realized at a certain point that the more that we were learning about Day of the Dead and what it's all about, I realized that we were telling a story that was completely antithetical, thematically, to what Dia de Los Muertos is all about. Because Dia de Los Muertos is about never letting go. It's about the importance of, remember your ancestors, and keeping their memories alive and we were telling a story that was from a very American, western, perspective about letting go and grieving. So at that point, I realized we needed to start over.

With this new perspective, the story that became Coco began to take form, and eventually, we got the movie that has become the highest grossing box office movie in Mexico's history. It's not a stretch to think that probably would not have been the case if the movie had simply used the Day of the Dead as a tool to tell a more American story. The original idea might not have been a bad movie, but it would not have been the right movie, as it would not have been an accurate depiction of the culture Unkrich was trying to spotlight.

If you somehow missed the excellent and heartwarming tale in theaters, you can now fix that error. Coco is now on Digital and will be available on Blu-ray February 27.

Warning: SPOILERS for Black Panther are ahead!

In addition to being one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most commercially successful movies, Black Panther is also being widely labeled as one of the best entries of the franchise. Among the many elements of T'Challa's standalone movie that are being praised is the main antagonist, Michael B. Jordan's Erik Stevens, a.k.a. Killmonger. Revealed to be Wakandan royalty and growing up to be a fierce black-ops assassin, Killmonger seized the African nation's throne and nearly succeeded in sending vibranium weaponry to Wakandan operatives across the globe. However, his plan was foiled thanks to T'Challa and his allies, and during his battle with the eponymous hero, Killmonger was stabbed in the chest, and he later removed the spearpoint to end his life.

We've already given our take on why Black Panther killing off its secondary antagonist, Andy Serkis' Ulysses Klaue, was a mistake. However, can the same be said for Killmonger, or was it the right creative call to take him off the board permanently? That's what we're here to hash out, so starting off, let's go over why it was a good decision for Killmonger to die in Black Panther.

ProSay what you will about Killmonger, he was a man who lived by his principles, however misguided they were. After discovering N'Jobu's journal, he grew up to continue the mission his father began: distributing vibranium weaponry to people of African descent across the globe so that they could rise up against their oppressors. In his mind, Killmonger was fighting to bring justice for people like him, and even when he was defeated, he valued his own freedom more than simply staying alive. As he told T'Challa after refusing the offer for Shuri to heal him:

Bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped from ships, 'cause they knew death was better than bondage.

That's an incredibly powerful statement to go out on, and certainly in keeping with Killmonger's characterization. Even in the aftermath of defeat, being thrown into a Wakandan prison for the rest of his life would have been a fate worse than death. If the fight between T'Challa and Killmonger had ended with the latter being taken into custody and swearing revenge, not only might that have come across as cliched, but then Black Panther wouldn't have hit that emotional note, which was one of the movie's best moments. Plus, an argument could be made that if T'Challa hadn't watched Killmonger choose to end his life, he might not have been swayed to set up that Wakandan outreach center in California and reveal Wakanda's true nature to the world. Killmonger's ideology was twisted, but he was right about one thing: Wakanda needs to start aiding the rest of the world rather than stay isolated. So if you think about it, for T'Challa to take that next developmental step, Killmonger needed to die.

ConAlthough Black Panther has been one of Marvel Comics' most enduring characters for decades, he doesn't have a particularly large rogues gallery, and some of his foes from the comics wouldn't necessarily work in a movie setting. With Ulysses Klaue dead and M'Baku being reframed as a rival-turned-ally for T'Challa, it would have been interesting to see T'Challa and Killmonger's conflict continue into another movie. Let's not forget that more often than not, the MCU kills off its main antagonists, and while for some this is a good idea, for others, taking them out prevents them from being fleshed out and becoming more appealing characters. Thankfully, Black Panther was able to make Killmonger extremely compelling in one movie, but imagine how much more we could have grown to appreciate him had he been kept for the surely-inevitable Black Panther 2.

Black Panther and Killmonger have been feuding in the comics for years, and on a couple occasions Killmonger was able to conquer Wakanda for himself, just like his cinematic counterpart did through more proper (but nonetheless sketchy) channels. While it would have been repetitive for Black Panther 2 to show Killmonger taking the Wakandan throne for himself again, that doesn't mean we couldn't have been given a fascinating follow-up match with his arch-nemesis. If the sequel didn't want to fully re-tread a direct fight between the two, perhaps there could have been a situation where T'Challa and Killmonger were forced to join forces to defeat a common enemy. Though I imagine that once said situation had been resolved, Killmonger would once again try to kill T'Challa. Regardless, it would have been great to see Killmonger continue being one of the MCU's best villains.

ConsensusThe MCU loves to set up sequels/future movies, whether it's through lingering plot threads or mid/post-credits scenes. So it wouldn't have been difficult for Black Panther to keep Killmonger alive and have him return for Black Panther 2. However, I believe that Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole made the right call with killing off Michael B. Jordan's character in Black Panther. Above all else, a movie needs to tell a good story, and one of the ways Black Panther did that was by giving Killmonger such a strong open-and-closed arc. Over the course of two+ hours, we watched him be a ruthless killing machine, take over an entire country and nearly succeed in starting a new world war. In the end, he was vanquished like most super villains are, but by going out on his own terms, Killmonger delivered a heartbreaking moment in Black Panther's final moments that not only was fitting for the kind of man he was, but also helped distinguish the story from other superhero movies. There certainly would have been potential in keeping Killmonger around for another movie, but it arguably wouldn't have been nearly as interesting as how his journey ended in the latest MCU movie.




However, we as museum professionals need to talk about the inclusion of this scene, especially regarding its function in a film that was cut from nearly four hours long in its first iteration to a solid two, a film that so many young people will see and one that is poised to become a cultural touchstone.
